Galveston Bay Charters

As we all know by now the wind has been hounding us all month. However bad it might seem, with a little perseverance and a few adjustments you can actually make the wind your friend. Started off the week with Dan Newton of Johnson Outdoors and Art Wright of Navionics. With the wind howling 20-25 knots and alot of whitecaps in the open bay decided to hit a leeward shoreline with scattered shell and some deep guts nearby. Locating some active bait we set up our first drift and about 4 cast in we started getting bit on a regular basis. Throwing TTFs KFM Xl's in the East Beast color was the ticket on this day. We fished til about 10:30 and ended up with 14 nice trout to 3lbs. Over the next 5 days I had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Ray Callas of Beaumont. Boy what a hoot this guy is. We waded for 3 straight days and had to grind every day to get our fish. The bite wasslow, but our patience paid of as were able to put together some nice stringers of trout and red fish. We caught a break in the wind on Tuesday and decided to make a long run to see if we could get a little topwater action. After about 45 minute of not even a look, we decided it was time to get out in the middle and catch some fish. On our first drift we both hooked up rather quickly and new this was going to be the ticket on this day. We were getting bit and landing fish on each and every drift all morning long. If this wind stays down our bay system is about to explode with what I think is going to be an awesome year of fishing. I'll start this report off with a big thanks to the proverbial "weather gods". As we all know this has been an unusual May, kind of like last year, for the wind has not wanted to lay and get us into our normal pattern for this time of year. Well, we finally caught a break and were able to make it to one of my favorite late spring areas to fish a windward shoreline. I had the pleasure of fun fishing with my good friends Dr. Andre Landry of Texas A&M Galveston, his son Peter or PDL, and Cody Maddox. We arrived to the area right at sun up and slipped out of the boat to start our wade. The Dr. and I went one way and PDL and Cody the other. I told everyone that it has been a mid-morning bite and to just be patient and the fish will eventually eat. We had a few early blow-ups, but no hook-ups, so I switched over to a slow suspending bait and was able to stick two solid fish pretty quick. Then the bait just went away and so did that small window of a bite. Cody and PDL got a little antsy and wanted to go look for fish somewhere else, so I told them to go ahead that the Dr. and I would just stay here and grind it out. Well, just like clockwork we started getting bit on a regular basis at around 9:30. When the impatient ones showed back up at about 11 o'clock we already had strung 8 trout between 18-20" and released a few that were in the 22-25" class. They eased out of the boat and joined the party. We had to shut it down at around noon since I had to make it to a prior engagement early that afternoon. We left them biting as we were pulling away. All and all it was a great time with good friends and a little lesson in patience. You know that is what I love about the Jetties, you just never know what your going to catch. I had two trips yesterday, and they were great! My morning trip was with Vance and his girlfriend Nina, this was there Fourth trip with me this year and what an action packed morning. We had close to a limit of solid fat 3-5lb trout and what I call tournament reds, thick big backed 26-28 inch fish. We also had several sheepshead and eater size black drum, not much time for the Captain to fish I was baiting hooks and netting fish from the minute we dropped anchor until we pulled hook. My afternoon trip was with Jaime his father Jack who came in from Georgia and good friend Scott, we returned to the same spot 2 hours later I was suprised it was still available we had several boats waiting to jump in on us that morning, but thankfully they had moved on by the time I returned. It was not long before the reds began pounding our baits.  These guys where all about catch and release and it did not hurt my "hands" feelings one bit. The trout were a little late to the party, but we ended up with one 16 inch Fish and his momma who was close to 8lbs. She came up on top and then ran right between both motors and unfortunatly she never slowed down. Oh well she would have been released anyway and we got to take a good look at her.
